Chapter 27. Ambush

T he cool night rain had just ceased, but the dense gray clouds were still obscuring the sky, preventing the light-eyed star, Yagli, from illuminating the maze. It seemed that it was pushing through these dense clouds but finally got lost and completely failed to illuminate this night.

“Yes... Well, the stone that hit my forehead was much larger than the previous one. Who knows, maybe Gelic put some meaning into it? Most likely he does,” Yar pondered.

In any case, it took Yar only a few moments to make a decision and evaluate all the favorable places for the upcoming fight. Those that were in front of the eyes, and those that remained behind him.

Dark Sabotage had a great advantage over any enemy and their ability to prepare for the battle. They could use their skills and opportunities as efficiently as possible, as well as their position. Yar saw a favorable place right in front of his eyes, where they could catch the enemy by surprise.

Shortly shouting as an owl, he quickly ran. The dark elves silently, like his shadows, followed their leader. Any observer, having sharp night vision, would surely hurry to get out of their way.

Yar wasn’t mistaken. He initially assumed that there were potholes along the entire perimeter of this vast space—and not only on the base but on the walls. There was nothing surprising in this. Apparently, the eight-legged monsters were constantly created here.

As soon as they stopped, Yar realized that he was right. He saw one wide passage and many ledges on the walls.

“Take a look around. Most likely, this is where our next battle will take place. I think the enemy will come from there.” Yar pointed to the passage. “We must be placed on the walls five feet above the ground. I am sure the unusual location, your stealth skills, and my disguise rune will be a big surprise for our hunters. The plan is as follows: having climbed to the height and, being actually under double secrecy, we are almost guaranteed to be indefinable for any spies. We will wait for the main group, let them go to shooting distance, and then shoot without regret anyone we can. If their shields work, we will jump down and shoot with bows under the stealth spell. Take one shot, then retreat to the side. There is nowhere to hide here, so they will have to fight hand-to-hand, which will benefit our swords and us. Go!” Yar ordered.

The dark elves dispersed, seeking out the better positions. Yar held the princess by the hand, asking, “Heiro, am I right that you are the best shooter of the dark clans, and you have a great bow?”

The princess nodded cheerfully and childishly. Yar pointed to a large cleft where one could calmly stand at full height and even move to the sides. “Then here is your position.”

Heiro looked attentively and sighed regretfully, shaking her head. “Despite all my efforts, I’m unlikely to get there. Of course, I can try the portal, but I’m afraid I’ll miss the ledge.
